Hank Green: My AI habit is not healthy

YouTuber Hank Green just dropped a public apology for his AI usage. He told TechCrunch he's been hooked on the dopamine hits from chatting with large language models. "The level of dopamine that I've been getting from interacting with LLMs ... is not healthy for me or good for the world," he said.

That's a rare thing to hear from someone in the tech space. Green is the guy behind the SciShow channel, the NerdSync podcast, and the whole Green Brothers universe. He's built a career on explaining things to people. And now he's saying the very tools that explain things to us are eating him alive.

He didn't say he's deleting his accounts. He said the habit is not healthy. That's the difference. He's not saying AI is evil. He's saying his relationship with it needs a reality check.

The thing about dopamine loops is they work on us whether we're 16 or 60. The cousin who can't stop scrolling Reels. The abuela who keeps watching the same 3-minute AI-generated video on Facebook. It's not a moral failure. It's a design feature. And we're all wired for it.

Green's apology is notable because he's not a random influencer. He's a science communicator who's spent years teaching kids that the brain is a machine with predictable parts. He knows what's happening to him. He just didn't think it would happen to him.

We see this everywhere in the comunidad. The side hustle that runs on AI-generated content. The auntie who trusts the AI summary over the doctor. The kid who asks the bot for homework instead of trying. It's not a problem for Silicon Valley to fix. It's a problem for us to manage.

Green is one of many voices now asking whether we're building tools that make us sharper, or tools that make us comfortable while we get duller.

Why this matters for us: If the people building these tools can't admit the habit is eating them, we need to learn how to set boundaries before the algorithm sets them for us.

“He knows what's happening to him. He just didn't think it would happen to him.”
