North Small Translate is open weights and does 50 languages well

CohereLabs released North Small Translate as an open-weights model. It has 25 billion active parameters — the rest are gated off — and 218 billion total.

It's built for machine translation, not general chat. The team tuned it across 50 languages, so it handles the ones that matter for la comunidad (Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Mandarin) without needing a separate fine-tuned model.

Open weights means you can run it yourself, drop it into your pipeline, or serve it through vLLM without paying per-token. No vendor lock-in.

For folks building translation tools — the ones that help abuelos read the doctor's notes or that power the next wave of low-cost translation APIs — this is a practical release. 25B is small enough to fit on a single GPU and fast enough for real-time use.

Why this matters for us: open-weights translation means the tools we rely on stay affordable and don't get held hostage by big AI companies charging per use.

The data you own beats the data you borrow

Schwedelson is making a simple point: proprietary data is the real moat. When models get cheaper and more commoditized, the edge isn't the model anymore — it's what you've accumulated over time that no one else has.

Think of it like the bodega down the block. The chain stores have better algorithms for inventory, but the bodega owner knows which families buy what, when they pay, who owes what. That knowledge is proprietary. No model can replicate it by scraping a website.

The same logic applies to businesses building on top of AI. The ones that hoard their own customer data, their own workflows, their own feedback loops — those are the ones that stay valuable when the models themselves become table stakes.

This is the kind of thing the auntie on Facebook understands intuitively. She doesn't need the latest app to know her customers. Her ledger is her moat.

Why this matters for us: the side hustles and family shops that own their customer data are the ones that survive the AI wave — they're the ones whose moats no model can fill.
