Travis Kalanick's Atom is eyeing robotaxis
Atoms, the self-driving car company Travis Kalanick bought out of Uber back in 2020, is reportedly exploring a robotaxi business. The company's been quiet for a while — it's one of those deep-pocketed, quietly expensive ventures where you hear about it only when someone's looking for a headline.
This is the kind of play that makes you raise an eyebrow. Robotaxi fleets are capital-intensive, heavily regulated, and already crowded with players like Waymo, Cruise, and Zoox. Kalanick has the cash and the appetite, but the market isn't exactly begging for another one.
Why this matters for us: the people who'll actually ride these things — la gente que toma el bus, que camina, que no tiene Uber — aren't on the investor call. When the money piles up for a technology nobody asked for, it's usually because the people who own it don't have to live with the consequences.
