Thousands of interstellar objects hiding in our solar system

New research suggests the Sun passed close enough to other stars billions of years ago to grab thousands of small rocks and ice chunks from alien systems. They've been drifting around our neighborhood ever since. We just haven't been looking hard enough for them.

The math is straightforward: when our solar system formed, the Sun moved through a dense star cluster. Gravitational tugs would have plucked interlopers from nearby stars and kept them in orbit. The estimate of thousands of objects is conservative — we've only confirmed a handful so far, like 'Oumuamua and Borisov. Most are too small and too faint for current telescopes to catch.

This isn't science fiction. It changes the map. Every comet or asteroid we catalog might carry the signature of another star. Mining, deflecting, or just studying these rocks could tell us about the chemistry of neighboring systems without ever leaving home. We've been treating our solar system as a closed box. It isn't.

Why this matters for us: the same kind of gravitational tugs that brought these rocks here will eventually bring more — and understanding what's already orbiting us is the only way to spot them before they get close.
