Memories stick around even when the brain goes dark
A new study shows mice can retrieve memories after hibernation — a state that basically shuts their brains off and trims down synapses. The finding suggests memories aren't locked into a single wiring pattern. They survive across shifting neural systems.
That's the part that has scientists stumped. If memories were just stored in fixed connections, the synaptic pruning of hibernation would have wiped them out. Instead, the mice come back with their memories intact. The implication is that recall is distributed — stored in the system as a whole, not in one precise circuit.
The study is small and the mechanism is unknown. What we do know is that the brain doesn't need to be fully awake for memories to persist, and that the way we think about memory storage might be too narrow.
