Cyborg cockroaches that carry meds into collapsed buildings

A research team has wired live cockroaches with tiny electrodes, then added a camera and a micro-syringe so the bugs can be steered remotely — and, in a first, deliver a dose of medicine to a spot on command. The insects aren't dead or drugged; they're guided by a pattern of electrical pulses applied to their nerves, which makes them turn and walk in a chosen direction.

The point isn't to make creepy pets. It's to send something small, resilient, and cheap into places where a robot can't fit. After a collapse, after a flood, after a fire, the air is thick with dust and the rubble is a maze. A person with a drone can't squeeze through a two-inch gap. A cyborg roach can, and it can carry a few milligrams of something — a painkiller, an antibiotic — and drop it off where a survivor might be.

Why this matters for us: disasters hit our barrios hardest and the response is slowest — a device like this could get medicine past the debris to the people the rescue crews can't reach yet.
