Contagious cancer found in North American catfish

A pair of catfish in a lake straddling the US–Canada border have the same cancer, and the cancer is actually moving between them — one of the first times scientists have documented a transmissible tumor in a vertebrate outside dogs and Tasmanian devils. The disease behaves like a parasite: cancer cells shed from one fish take up residence in another, setting up shop and growing there. It’s the same story with the Tasmanian devil facial tumor disease, except the host is freshwater fish.

The find matters because it shows that cancer isn’t always a one-off mistake in a single animal’s cells. Sometimes it’s an organism in its own right — a living thing that can hop hosts. That changes how we think about tumors: less like broken parts, more like a second life growing inside the first. It also means the same cancer can spread through a population, which has implications for how we track outbreaks in the wild.

Why this matters for us: the same rules that let a tumor travel between fish also apply to the tumors in our own bodies — and to the new wave of therapies learning to weaponize cancer against cancer. The line between disease and organism is thinner than we thought.
