Solid-state batteries aren't ready. Semi-solid gels are
Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere now, and their liquid electrolytes are causing real trouble. E-bikes exploding in stairwells. Power banks combusting midflight. The CPSC has been tracking these incidents as they've multiplied across households and workplaces.
Solid-state batteries — the ones with no liquid at all — have been the promised fix for years. But they're still not ready. So the real progress is happening in between: semi-solid state batteries, the ones with gel-like electrolytes. They're safer than the old liquid kind, easier to manufacture than the pure solid kind, and already making their way into e-bikes, power stations, and the tools we depend on.
Why this matters for us: la gente riding e-bikes, running side hustles with power tools, and charging devices daily is getting safer batteries without having to wait for the solid-state promise to finally deliver.
“Solid-state batteries aren't ready. Semi-solid gels are the move.”
