WordPress still runs 43% of the web — and nobody's closing the gap
WordPress powers 43% of all websites. The rest of the market is split between Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, and a long tail of CMS platforms. No one is catching up.
The chart is sparse, but the headline is clear: WordPress hasn't lost ground. The alternatives haven't eaten into it. They've carved out niches — Shopify for stores, Wix for DIY, Squarespace for portfolios — but the big pie stays the same.
This matters for primos running side businesses. WordPress + WooCommerce is the cheapest stack for a small shop. A domain, a host, maybe a $30 theme. If WordPress loses share, that path gets harder. If it holds, it stays the open-source backdoor for anyone who can't afford a SaaS subscription.
Why this matters for us: WordPress is the one platform that lets la gente build without getting locked into a monthly bill — the more it holds its share, the more we keep control of our own sites.
