The Z Flip 8 is at its best when there's friction

The hardware is about the same as last year — same hinge, same 3,300 mAh, same 50MP main camera. But the cover screen has a new brain. Samsung finally let the little display run the full Android UI instead of a stripped-down shell. That means the full versions of Google apps, Maps, Wallet, even the camera — all running on the 1.5-inch screen when the phone is folded shut.

For years Samsung held the line on the cover screen: notifications and a few widgets, nothing more. Some fans and Motorola's Razr pushed for the full thing. Now Samsung has given in. The 1.5-inch display is small enough to feel like a smartwatch, but big enough for one-handed scrolling and taps. It's the kind of change you only notice once you pick it up and start using it folded.
