The TLDR Newsletter is shutting down — and the code behind it is free

A newsletter called TLDR is closing. Its founder, Dan, says the business ran out of runway. He can’t keep the lights on.

But here’s the twist. He’s leaving the source code behind. It’s free for anyone who wants to pick it up and run it. No gatekeeping. No paywall. Just the repo, open.

It’s a small thing. A few thousand readers. A couple of side projects. But it’s a lesson in how software actually works in the real world. It’s not a unicorn pitch. It’s not a 10x growth hack. It’s a person, a laptop, and a habit of showing up every day.

The code is out there. The newsletter is gone. But the idea survives. Anyone can fork it. Anyone can spin it up. No permission needed.

It’s a quiet kind of generosity. You build something, it doesn’t scale, and instead of letting it die in silence, you hand the keys to the comunidad.

Why this matters for us: when the big platforms close, the code doesn’t have to die with them — we can keep the tools running for our own people, on our own terms.

“The code is out there. The newsletter is gone. But the idea survives.”
