Tesla and Sunrun pair up for 16 gigawatts of batteries to run data centers
Tesla's Powerwall and Megapack batteries are going into Sunrun's virtual power plants. The deal covers 16 gigawatts. Sunrun already has residential batteries on 750,000 homes, and Tesla's grid-scale megapacks are stacking at substations. Together they let utilities call on that stored power when the grid needs it.
The gigawatts show up in three places: home batteries that can discharge during peak hours, megapacks bolted to the grid, and the software that ties them together. Sunrun's app lets the utility dispatch power on demand. Tesla's Megapack is the big unit — 4 megawatts each — and they're shipping them faster than the grid can keep up.
This is a big deal for grid reliability. More batteries means less chance of brownouts when everyone turns on the AC at the same time. It also means homes and substations can sell power back to the grid instead of just taking it.
Why this matters for us: the people who own the batteries — homeowners, small businesses, and the communities with the most solar — get to sell their stored power instead of just paying for it. That's real income for la gente on the grid.
