OpenTelemetry is done growing up. Now it ships

OpenTelemetry left the CNCF incubator and became a graduated project as of August 31, 2026. That's a formal milestone — the project has passed maturity gates and now lives in the CNCF's main catalog rather than its sandbox. In practice it means the spec has stabilized, the governance structure is locked in, and the community can ship releases without the incubation safety net.

OpenTelemetry is the open standard for collecting traces, metrics, and logs from applications — the plumbing that lets you ask what went wrong when a service is slow. Before it graduated, the project lived in incubation, which signals "still maturing." Now it's officially graduated, so the spec is set and the releases are stable. Teams that rely on it can stop waiting for the dust to settle.

Why this matters for us: when the pipes are stable, the open-source tools we actually use — Grafana, Datadog, PagerDuty, the side hustles we build — all get more reliable without us having to fork anything.
