OpenAI's Greg Brockman is going public — and it's not what you'd think

OpenAI is filing for an IPO through Greg Brockman, one of its co-founders. The company is the same OpenAI that launched ChatGPT and has been quietly building one of the biggest AI infrastructure stacks in the country. Brockman is the face of the thing — former OpenAI president, now the vehicle for this filing.

OpenAI has been operating in the shadows long enough that most people don't know it's a for-profit entity now. It switched structures in 2023, and the market has been waiting for the public markets to open up. The filing itself is the signal: this company is no longer a mystery box. It's going to trade, and investors will get to know exactly what the balance sheet looks like.

What matters for la gente is that the companies building on OpenAI's models — the app shops, the automation tools, the side hustles running on GPT — are all tied to one public company now. When OpenAI moves, the whole stack moves. The pricing, the access, the rules of the road — all of it becomes a public filing. You can read it. You can track it. No more behind-the-curtain decisions by a private board.

Why this matters for us: OpenAI powers half the AI apps our community uses to get work done, and now that it's public, we can actually hold it accountable when it changes prices or access.

No more behind-the-curtain decisions by a private board.
