Nvidia's Vera CPU is a heavy lift for the AI era
Nvidia is rolling out Vera — a custom CPU built for AI workloads, and it's supposed to challenge the traditional x86 players like AMD and Intel. The pitch is that as the AI stack shifts from GPUs to CPUs for things like token processing, inference, and data movement, Vera is positioned to fill that gap.
This is Nvidia trying to own more of the silicon stack. They've already cornered the GPU market for training; now they want to control what feeds the GPUs and what runs the models. Vera is part of that play — a vertical integration move that lets them bundle CPU + GPU + networking into a single box instead of buying parts from other vendors.
The real question is whether this matters for the people building the stack. If Vera wins, Nvidia gets to set the standards for AI hardware — the sockets, the interconnects, the software. If it flops, they've overextended. For now, it's a bet that the AI era needs more than GPUs, and that Nvidia can make the rest of the silicon too.
