Netflix invented binge-watching. Now it's moving on

Netflix is changing how it handles its biggest shows. Instead of dropping all episodes at once so you can bing them, the company is rolling them out weekly. The first show to get this treatment is a new season of The Witcher, hitting on July 29 with one episode a week for seven weeks.

The shift goes back further than this rollout. In 2018, when Stranger Things season 2 dropped, Netflix already started testing weekly releases on some shows. Binge releases became the default — a move the company itself popularized and that reshaped how people consume TV. Now they're undoing it.

Why this matters for us: Netflix is a business, and the way it releases content affects how the shows we watch get made and marketed — and how we talk about them.
