Modelplane: a control plane for running lots of models at once
Crossplane's new Modelplane is a Kubernetes controller that manages multiple LLM providers and lets you route requests through a single API. Instead of writing separate clients for OpenAI, Anthropic, and others, you point to a ModelPlane resource and let it handle the plumbing — retries, routing, the whole thing.
The key idea is declarative: you declare what model you want, what context window it needs, and how to balance cost versus latency. The controller picks the right one and keeps it running. You get a single endpoint for all your models, which matters when your app is calling OpenAI for chat, Anthropic for reasoning, and a local model for embeddings.
It's built on the same CRD pattern that makes Crossplane useful — you write YAML, the controller does the work, and everything is visible in the cluster. No custom SDK, no vendor lock-in. If you're already running Crossplane, this drops in without changing how you manage the rest.
Why this matters for us: it keeps the models under our control instead of letting any one vendor price-gouge us, and it means our brown-led shops can run a fleet of models without hiring a senior engineer to keep the pipelines from breaking.
