Mobileye is launching robotaxis in the US

Mobileye, Intel's autonomous driving unit, is entering the American robotaxi market with a standalone service. The company is deploying fully driverless cars across US cities, betting on its vision-only approach to self-driving tech rather than the lidar-heavy systems competitors are using.

This isn't Mobileye's first time in the US — they've been quietly testing their technology for years — but a standalone robotaxi service is a different commitment than piloting with automakers. They're going all-in on the vision-only approach, which means fewer sensors, lower costs, and a cleaner path to scaling across more roads. The move puts them in direct competition with Waymo and Cruise, who've already established themselves in key markets.

Why this matters for us:

Less hardware, more roads — that's the play.
