Microdramas are winning — and the money is real

Mike Shields wrote up the latest numbers on microdramas, the 1–2 minute vertical videos people binge on apps like ReelShort. They're not the indie shorts you'd find on Vimeo; they're soap operas shot for the phone, often with thin scripts and bigger budgets than you'd expect. The genre is a legit business now, not a TikTok experiment.

The key shift is that audiences have stopped treating these as junk and started treating them as content worth paying for. People open the app, pick an episode, and pay in small chunks to keep watching. That changes the economics — the old creator model of ad revenue doesn't apply, and the apps make their money on the front end. It's closer to cable subscriptions than to YouTube views.

This fits a wider pattern: the internet is splitting into walled gardens where you pay for access instead of watching ads. The people who figure out how to make content for those walled gardens are the ones getting paid. The rest of us are still chasing clicks.

Why this matters for us: the creators and writers who adapt to these pay-to-watch formats are the ones building real income streams — and the rest of the comunidad is watching to see who makes it.

The old ad model is dead — the new model is pay the app and keep watching.
