Meta's Cloud: the quiet bet against AWS and Google

Meta is rolling out its own cloud, and it's not a vanity project. The infrastructure was built for Facebook and Instagram — the kind of scale that makes AWS look fussy. Now the company is selling it to the outside world.

Meta's setup is different from the big players. They run on their own silicon — the MT4 chip — and they've spent years optimizing for their own workloads. That means lower costs at scale. The open-source angle is also worth noting: PyTorch is the deep learning framework of choice for a lot of shops, and having the cloud baked into that ecosystem is a play for the AI crowd.

The move makes sense. Meta has been running this machine for years. AWS charges you for the privilege of not building your own. Meta's offering is leaner. If the pricing holds, it's a real contender for shops that care about the bottom line.

This is the kind of infrastructure shift that doesn't make headlines but quietly reshapes who wins the next round of funding. Smaller teams that were priced out of AWS will find an alternative that actually undercuts it.

Why this matters for us: the cloud is consolidating in favor of the companies that built their own tools — and if you're running a side business on someone else's platform, this changes the rent you pay.
