Meta's AI Cloud Push: Who Pays When the Primos Get Left Behind

Meta is pushing hard into AI cloud infrastructure, building out massive data centers and offering GPU compute to enterprises and developers. The company's business model hinges on selling that compute power — a high-margin bet on the AI boom.

But the economics are tilted. The cheapest AI compute still costs real money. Small shops, local nonprofits, community orgs, and individual devs without big grants or VC backing get priced out. The big labs and well-funded startups get the best hardware. The rest waits in line.

This isn't just about who gets the fastest model. It's about who controls the pipeline. If the cloud is where the AI lives, and the cloud is where Meta dominates, then the gatekeepers are the same gatekeepers. The community org trying to build a translation tool for Spanish-speaking parents at the school? They're competing against a company that just spent billions on servers.

The hype around AI democratization keeps getting repeated. But democratization without access to compute is just a marketing slide. You can't democratize what you can't afford to run.

Why this matters for us: when the AI infrastructure is owned by one or two companies, the tools that serve our communities get priced out of the market — and the people who benefit from those tools are the ones who can least afford to pay for them.

“Democratization without access to compute is just a marketing slide.”
