A startup is building a 500-watt UV-C fixture that doesn't just sit on a ceiling—it moves. The UV-C band (around 260nm) kills viruses and bacteria by smashing their RNA. It's the same physics that made UV-C the go-to for hospitals during COVID, and the same one that makes it dangerous to human skin and lungs.

The trick is the housing. The unit is mounted in a duct, where the fan pulls air across the bulb and spits it back out. Because the light is fully enclosed, nobody gets exposed. The company says the 500W version can treat a room the size of a big warehouse in minutes. You stack them and you get whole-facility coverage without the hazards that made earlier UV-C installations a liability.

Why this matters for us: If these fixtures make it into laundromats, bodegas, and the small shops that keep our neighborhoods moving, the air we breathe at work and at home just got cleaner—and the people who can afford them will set the standard. The ones who can't will keep breathing what the landlord won't pay to fix.
