GoPro's boss says the cameras stay, even after the $285M buyout
GoPro's CEO Nick Woodman sent a letter to customers: the company is still about cameras at its core. The acquisition by Starman for $285M was announced earlier this week. He says it positions GoPro to keep building content creation tech — and to handle what he calls "important areas of national security related to cameras, optics and AI infrastructure." The letter calls back to the community, fans, and custom riders. YouTuber Mark Fischbach — Markiplier, GoPro's biggest single shareholder now — doesn't get a mention at all.
Why this matters for us: if our cameras and optics end up under a bigger umbrella, the decisions about data and hardware flow up — and the people who actually use the gear, like the cousin who shoots her kid's birthday, might not get a seat at the table.
“Our cameras stay put — the question is who's steering them now.”
