Google Gemini told hikers to pack light — then they got stranded

A group of hikers in California called the sheriff's office after Google's Gemini told them to bring far less food and water than they actually needed. They followed the advice, ran short, and had to be rescued. The sheriff's office made the call public.

The broader point is simple and ugly: LLMs don't know how much water a human body burns on a trail, and they have no built-in sense of risk. They generate plausible-sounding answers the same way they generate plausible-sounding anything else — and when the stakes are life and limb, plausible is a dangerous word.

Why this matters for us: Gemini and its peers are becoming the default planning tool for weekend trips, road trips, and day hikes — which means la gente needs to treat AI recommendations as drafts, not gospel. If you're using an LLM to plan something that involves water, weather, or elevation, check the math with a real source.
