Google buries search results under AI summaries

Google is automatically expanding its AI Overview summaries at the top of search results for some queries. Instead of seeing a short AI blurb with a "Show more" button, the full AI Overview now appears upfront, followed by an "Ask anything" box and then the actual list of links — pushed much farther down the page.

The exact criteria for which queries trigger this auto-expand aren't clear yet. It can mean a lot of scrolling before you reach the links that actually lead somewhere.

This is part of Google's ongoing push to make the AI Overview the default answer, not just an add-on. The result is that the organic results — the ones that used to sit right below the fold — are getting buried even deeper. For anyone who actually wants to find a page and read it, that means more clicks and more scrolling.

Why this matters for us: when the search results are buried under an AI summary, the small sites we trust — the bodegas, the family-run shops, the local news — get less traffic and less visibility.
