What a system prompt actually does — and why it matters for your side hustle
You know how your abuela gives you instructions when she sends you to the mercado? She doesn’t say “go buy food.” She says, “Buy the cilantro, not the parsley. Get the small onions. Don’t let the vendor short you on peso.” That’s a system prompt.
An AI model without a prompt is like a cousin who knows how to cook but has no recipe. He’ll throw something in the pan, but you never know what flavor you’re getting. The prompt is the recipe card. It tells the model: who to be, what to avoid, how to talk.
Think of it like your family WhatsApp group chat. When you send a message there, you don’t write “Dear Sir/Madam.” You write “primos, la migra is at the border again, watch out.” The prompt sets the tone, the audience, the rules. Same thing for the AI.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you: the prompt isn’t just instructions. It’s the first layer of control. If you don’t set the rules, the model sets them for you — and it will default to corporate, safe, boring.
Why this matters for us: Most of us are already using AI tools for our businesses, our kids’ homework, our translation needs. If we don’t understand what the system prompt is doing, we’re letting someone else write the rules for how our own words get answered.
So here’s your move: when you use any AI tool, ask yourself — who wrote the instructions underneath? And if you’re the one typing the prompt, write it like you’re talking to a cousin, not a lawyer. Be specific. Set the tone. Say what you don’t want. The model will follow.
