Mixture of Experts: The Family Group Chat That Actually Works

Mixture of Experts, or MoE, is a way to build bigger AI models that don't cost a fortune to run.

Here's the trick. A normal model tries to answer every question using the same giant brain. MoE splits that brain into smaller experts. One expert handles math. Another handles Spanish. Another handles code. When a question comes in, a tiny router decides which expert should answer it. The rest stay quiet. You only pay for the expert you use.

Think of it like the family WhatsApp group chat. When Tía Rosa posts a recipe, only the cooking people reply. The mechanics don't chime in. The engineers don't weigh in. Everyone stays in their lane. The group stays fast. The noise stays low.

MoE does the same thing at scale. Instead of one model grinding through every problem, a small gating network picks the right expert for the job. You get the capacity of a huge model with the cost of a small one.

Why this matters for us:
Big models are getting cheaper to run, which means more services stay free for working people instead of locking everything behind a $20/month paywall.

Tip: When a company says their AI is "cost-efficient," ask if it uses a mixture-of-experts architecture — that's usually the reason the price stays low.
