What is a Context Window? Your AI's short-term memory
Every AI chatbot has a limit on how much it can hold in its head at once. We call this the context window. Think of it as the amount of paper on the desk during a meeting. If someone pastes five pages into the chat, the AI can read them all. But if you paste twenty, the AI starts forgetting the first five. It doesn't mean the AI is broken. It means the desk is full.
Here's the real-world analogy. Imagine you're at the barbershop. The barber has a good memory for the last few cuts, the price, and the style you want. But if you start talking about your cousin's wedding three towns over, and your auntie's chicken recipe, and the carpool schedule, the barber is going to lose the thread. He's not ignoring you. He just has a limit on how much he can hold in his head while he's cutting your hair. That limit is the context window.
Why this matters for us:
Your AI assistant is not a person. It is a tool with a memory span. If you paste a whole letter, a contract, or a family history into the chat, the AI might forget the beginning by the time it reaches the end. That's not a bug. That's the limit.
Tip: If your AI keeps missing details, break your request into smaller pieces. Ask it to summarize the first part before you paste the second. Don't dump a whole document at once. The desk is small — use it wisely.
Next time you paste a long message and the AI says "I don't remember what you said earlier," don't get mad. Just split it into two shorter messages. The barber doesn't need the whole neighborhood story to cut your hair. He just needs the part that matters right now.
