Apple's Siri could go behind a paywall for power users

Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company may let users buy extra compute for Siri AI through iCloud+ subscriptions. The move would turn the assistant into a tiered service. Free users get the basics. Those who pay more get more processing power.

The idea is simple enough. You want faster or deeper AI responses. You pay a higher iCloud+ tier. Apple already runs iCloud+ at multiple levels. Adding an AI compute add-on fits the existing structure. No new app. No new store. Just a subscription bump.

It also fits Apple's broader push. The company has been adding AI features to Siri, Photos, and writing tools. They want you to feel the upgrade. They want you to pay for it. The paywall isn't new. It's just now pointing at the assistant you use every day.

For power users, the trade-off is clear. More compute means faster responses, longer context, better reasoning. Less compute means the same old Siri with the same old limits. The decision lands on your wallet, not your patience.

The rollout isn't confirmed yet. Cook described the vision. Apple hasn't announced a date or pricing. But the direction is set. If you rely on Siri for work, for planning, for getting things done, the free tier might not be enough anymore.

Why this matters for us: When Apple puts a paywall on an assistant you already use, it hits families who can't stretch subscriptions and small businesses that rely on free tools to get through the day. It's not a small change. It's a shift in who gets access to the tools they depend on.
