Anthropic is designing a new chip with Samsung
Anthropic is in talks with Samsung to build a custom chip for Claude. This is the kind of move that signals the company is done with renting GPUs and wants to own its compute.
The chip is expected to arrive in 2027. The deal is being led by Samsung's Foundry team, which has been pushing hard to compete with TSMC for the big AI accounts. A custom chip means Anthropic can optimize the silicon for Claude's specific workload — less wasted die, more throughput per dollar.
This is the same pattern NVIDIA saw coming: the biggest AI labs are no longer just customers, they're competitors in silicon. Google, Microsoft, and Meta all have custom chips. Anthropic joining that club means the model wars are about to get a hardware layer.
Why this matters for us: as the big labs design their own chips, the cost of running AI drops — and the ones that control the silicon control the price of intelligence.
