AI mentions vs citations: what the study actually says
A recent study looked at how often AI models mention sources versus actually citing them. The headline takeaway is simple: AI can name-drop a lot of stuff without pointing you to the real source.
That’s not a new problem. It’s been around since the early days of search. But the scale is different now. One prompt can generate dozens of references that look real but don’t actually lead anywhere.
The study didn’t invent this. It just measured it. And the numbers are not great.
This is not a deep dive. The research is thin on methodology, and TLDR Marketing is summarizing it for people who don’t have time to read the full paper. That’s fair. Most of us don’t.
What it does tell you: if you’re using AI for research, marketing, or writing, don’t trust the citations. Check them. Always.
Why this matters for us: when la gente is relying on AI to find info for their small business, their kids’ homework, or their side hustle, bad citations mean they’re getting sent down rabbit holes — and nobody’s holding the model accountable.
