A virtual cell model from a Shenzhen startup — real cells in silicon
A Chinese biotech called Lifespan just released a model that simulates what a cell does, down to the molecules inside. It's built by a private firm, not a university lab or a big tech outfit. The model lets researchers run virtual experiments on cells without touching real ones.
The play here is obvious: wet-lab time is expensive and slow. Pipettes, reagents, animal work — all of it bogs down discovery. If you can simulate the cell first, you cut the number of real experiments you need. That means faster hits and less waste.
What makes this particular one worth watching is the founder. Lifespan was started by Wu Yifu, a former DeepMind researcher who moved back to Shenzhen in 2021. DeepMind's AlphaFold already rewired how people think about protein folding; this is a next step — simulating the whole cell rather than a single protein. The company is small and private, so details are thin, but the trajectory tracks with the bigger shift: wet biology getting a compute layer.
Why this matters for us: it's a reminder that the next wave of biotech won't just come out of Boston labs — it's happening in Shenzhen too, and the people running it are the same ones who built the models we use every day.
